Spinal Adjustment vs. Flexion Distraction: What's the Difference?
If you’ve been referred for chiropractic care in Twin Falls, Idaho, you may have heard the terms spinal adjustment and flexion distraction and wondered how they differ. Both are techniques used by chiropractors to improve spinal movement and reduce pain, but they work in different ways and are often suited to different conditions. At Canyon Springs Chiropractic, we use both spinal adjustment and flexion distraction as part of our resource center education, helping Twin Falls and Magic Valley patients understand what to expect from their care.
What Is a Spinal Adjustment?
A spinal adjustment, sometimes called spinal manipulation or chiropractic manipulation, is a hands on technique in which a chiropractor applies a controlled, quick force to a joint in the spine, often referred to as a high velocity, low amplitude thrust. The goal is to improve joint mobility, restore movement in a restricted area, and reduce stress on surrounding muscles and nerves.
Many patients associate this technique with the audible “pop” or “crack” that can occur when gas is released from the joint, though not every adjustment produces this sound.
Spinal adjustment is commonly used for general joint restriction, neck and back stiffness, and everyday musculoskeletal strain, such as the kind we frequently see in Twin Falls patients who spend long hours on their feet, at a desk, or doing physical labor. Learn more about spinal adjustments.
What Is Flexion Distraction?
Flexion distraction is a gentler, non thrust technique performed using a specialized treatment table that slowly flexes and stretches the spine in a controlled, rhythmic motion. Rather than a quick manual thrust, the chiropractor uses the table to gently distract, or create space between, the vertebrae while flexing the spine forward.
This technique is often used for conditions involving the spinal discs, such as bulging or herniated discs, because it is designed to reduce pressure within the disc space without the higher force movement used in a traditional spinal adjustment. Flexion distraction may also be a good option for patients who prefer a lower force approach or who have not responded as well to manual adjustment alone.
